Until this year, becoming an Assistant Audit Officer meant a separate SSC exam most aspirants never sat. From 2026, AAO is part of CGL โ three Pay Level-8 posts, the highest tier ever in CGL, alongside the same Tier-I you're already preparing for.

Assistant Audit Officer (Central) under the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (C&AG) is one of the three new Pay Level-8 posts entering CGL for the first time in 2026. The post carries a basic pay of โน47,600 in Pay Matrix Level-8 โ the highest of any CGL post in 2026 โ with all standard central government allowances (HRA, TA, DA) on top.
AAO (Central) officers are posted to the offices of the Accountant General (Audit) across India. The role involves auditing the accounts of central government ministries, departments, public sector undertakings, and autonomous bodies. This is a Group-B Gazetted post, which means AAOs exercise independent authority in their audit functions and sign audit reports.
The educational qualification for AAO is a B.Com degree or an equivalent Commerce degree from a recognized university, or a CA/ICWA qualification. Age limit is 18โ30 years (as of 1 August 2026). Candidates must additionally qualify Tier-II Paper-III (Finance & Economics, 200 marks) which is mandatory only for AAO/AAccO post aspirants. Vacancies are tentative and will be updated by SSC.
