Inspector (Examiner) under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) is a customs-side enforcement post. Examiners are posted to ports, airports, ICDs (Inland Container Depots), and land customs stations across India. The core function is examination of import/export cargo, assessment of customs duty, and detection of smuggling.
The role involves physical examination of goods against import documents, sampling of goods for laboratory testing, appraising the value of merchandise, and assisting Superintendent-level officers in anti-smuggling operations. Uniform is mandatory; a uniform allowance is provided.
Basic pay is ₹44,900 (Level-7). CBIC postings cover India's major ports (Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, JNPT) and international airports (Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad). Promotion from Examiner leads to Appraiser (Level-8 equivalent) over time.
Age limit: 18–30 years. Any Bachelor's degree qualifies. Physical fitness and the ability to work shift duties at ports are practical requirements, though not formally tested in the exam.
