About this post

Inspector of Income Tax under the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is one of the most popular CGL posts. Officers are posted to Income Tax offices across India and work across assessment, recovery, and tax intelligence units.

The role involves assisting in income tax assessment proceedings, conducting raids and surveys under senior officers' supervision, recovery of tax arrears, and processing of tax returns. Inspector IT is a fieldwork-heavy post — unlike desk-based secretariat postings.

Basic pay is ₹44,900 (Level-7) with HRA, TA, DA, and department-specific allowances. CBDT also provides uniform allowance. Promotion track: Inspector → Income Tax Officer (ITO) — typically 6–10 years; ITO is a Group-A Gazetted post, making Inspector IT one of the few CGL posts that leads directly to Group-A.

Age limit: 18–30 years (as of 1 August 2026). No specific degree subject required — any Bachelor's degree from a recognized university. Vacancies are among the largest for Pay Level-7 posts.

Key responsibilities

  • Assistance in income tax assessment and scrutiny proceedings
  • Tax recovery, survey, and search assistance under senior officers
  • Processing of returns and examination of accounts during assessment
  • Correspondence with taxpayers on notices and compliance

Posting & transfer

Posted anywhere in India to Income Tax offices. Transfer follows CBDT policy.
